Explore African-American History at New Quarter Park on Oct. 2

I just received this email from Sara Lewis, who led us on that fun kayaking trip at New Quarter Park. This tour sounds fascinating, but I’ll be out of town on Saturday, so if you go, please let me know if you enjoyed it. Thank you Sara, for permission to post your email:

Dear Friends of New Quarter Park –

Please join us on Saturday for a very special program! Historian Robert Watson will lead a Walk and Talk, “Remembering the Forgotten” on Oct. 2, beginning at 10 a.m. The program is dedicated to the memory of the African and Virginia-born slaves who toiled on New Quarter farm between the mid- 1660s and early 19th century and the program will be held at the archaeology site. Signs and staff will point you in the right direction when you arrive. The site is approximately a quarter mile from the office.

Before the Walk and Talk and beginning at 9 a.m., the archaeology site and some artifacts that have been discovered there will be on display. Dave Hazzard, archaeologist with the Virginia Department of Historic Resources, will be on hand to talk about the dig and archaeology work that has been done on the larger New Quarter property.

It will be busy on Saturday! The Bruton High School Panther Invitational Cross Country Race will start in the overflow parking area at 8 a.m. and the EVMA group mountain bike ride will start at 9 a.m. at the trail head.

It’s truly fall at last! Your October calendar of events is attached. Please print and post it on a bulletin board near you.

See you at the Park!
Sara
